TRANSINDONESIA.CO – Yogyakarta proposed to be the World Batik City, representing Indonesia. Following up on that, the World Crafts Council, based in Beijing, China conducted a review to Indonesia.

On Sunday (08/24/2014), they came to the center of batik in Hamlet Giriloyo, Imogiri, Bantul, Yogyakarta. A review once part of the assessment process of contestation annual event organized by the World Crafts Council.

There are nine members of the board of the craft’s team who attended to Giriloyo batik craft centers. They were accompanied by the management ranks of the National Crafts Council (Dekranas) DIY and the Department of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives (Disperindagkop) Bantul.

At craft centers, they want to see the process of making batik with various stages. The results of the assessment will be used as a reference to determine which ones deserve the city won the title of world cities to craft distinctive icon.

In the meantime, Yogya successfully nominated in the top six.

Executive Director Roni Dekranas DIY Guritno said, DIY Dekranas had suggested to the World Crafts Council to serve as the City’s gudeg World Batik City.

“To be a World Batik City must compete with six other countries in Asia Pacific. But I do not memorize any country, “he said.

In this event, batik craft DIY proposed as an icon because of a number of considerations. Among them: batik has been acknowledged as one of the world heritage by Unesco and the existence of batik handicraft center in Yogyakarta.

“Yogya was complete. Both in terms of history, art, until the batik craftsmen who have economic value, “he added.

There will be many advantages if Yogya managed to come out as a winner, especially on the economy. World Crafts Council will socialize Yogya all over the world. Thus, the people of the world will be more familiar with batik Yogya trademark.

Head Disperindagkop Sulistyanta hope Bantul, Yogyakarta able to snatch the prestigious title. So that handicrafts in Yogyakarta, especially batik can be more global.

“This impact is incredible, especially for the batik,” he said.

Therefore, Sulis mentioned, nearly 70 percent of artisans in Yogyakarta batik originated from the district of Bantul. Giriloyo area, Imogiri one of them. “Crafts in Imogiri predominantly batik. Nearly 50 percent of handicrafts here are batik, “he said.(vvn/ats)
